For an energy company, we developed a comprehensive mobile application that enables users to control and configure a proprietary smart home assistant. The device, comparable to well-known voice assistants on the market, required an intuitive and powerful mobile application to unlock its full functionality. Particular challenges included hardware-related development and the implementation of a smooth onboarding process. For a successful start for the user with the device, it was essential to enable a clear and simple initial setup while making complex technical steps such as WiFi configuration and device authentication user-friendly. In an agile development process with a 7-member Scrum team consisting of experienced iOS and Android developers, we implemented features step by step and continuously validated them with user tests. Close collaboration with the customer's hardware team ensured that the app interacts optimally with the physical device.

Challenge
The central challenge was developing an app that makes hardware-related functions such as Bluetooth configuration, WiFi setup and firmware updates user-friendly. At the same time, an intuitive onboarding had to be developed that guides even less tech-savvy users safely through the setup process. The simultaneous development of hardware and software also required high flexibility and continuous adjustments when hardware specifications changed.
Solution
We chose an iterative, user-oriented development approach, designing the app in close coordination with the hardware developers. For onboarding, we implemented a step-by-step assistant that breaks down complex technical processes into simple, understandable steps. Native development for iOS and Android enabled optimal performance and seamless interaction with the device APIs. Regular user tests and feedback loops ensured that the app meets the needs and expectations of the target audience.
Results
The finished app enables a smooth start to using the smart home assistant and offers intuitive control of all functions. Thanks to the well-designed onboarding, the support rate for initial setup was significantly reduced compared to similar products.
